Slow Food UVa is an on-grounds chapter of the international Slow Food movement working to change the UVa community’s relationship with food. We advocate for Good, Clean, and Fair food- food that is good for the people, fair for those who cultivate it, and sustainable for the land it grows on. We believe in not only increasing awareness about issues of food systems and food justice, but also building connections and appreciation for the pleasures of eating through the sharing of food and knowledge.
But what is Slow Food?
Slow Food is an idea, a way of living, and a way of eating. It is a global, grassroots organization with supporters in 150 countries around the world who are linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to the community and the environment.
Started in Italy in 1989, Slow Food was founded to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. Members believe that everyone has a fundamental right to the pleasure of good food and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that make this pleasure possible.
Out of this philosophy, what has emerged is a mission of promoting good, clean, and fair food for all.
GOOD a fresh and flavorsome seasonal diet that satisfies the senses and is part of our local culture;
CLEAN food production and consumption that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health;
FAIR accessible prices for consumers and fair conditions and pay for small-scale producers.
Food is also believed to be tied to many aspects of life, including culture, politics, agriculture and the environment. To target this wide variety of areas, Slow Food works to
defend biodiversity in our food supply,
promote food and taste education,
and connect sustainable co-producers through events and building networks.
Slow Food relies heavily upon its members and chapters all over the world, and would love for YOU to take part in its wonderful cause here at the University of Virginia!
